It’s no surprise that MTV decided to let Britney open the Video Music Awards ceremony with no performance involved, after the disaster she made last year of “Gimme More.”
But still, MTV president Van Toffler thinks the 26-year-old singer will be the show’s main attraction, whether she sings or not.
Britney’s appearance at Sunday’s event in Los Angeles will reportedly feature something “fun and unexpected.”
In a statement, Spears talked about the important role that MTV played in her career, saying she was very excited to open the show and greeting her fans. She also expressed her enthusiasm at the fact that her single "Piece of Me" earned three nominations: Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year.
Everybody recalls Britney dancing with a snake or kissing Madonna on the same event in the previous years, but no one has any idea what she will do now.
Van Toffler said the public is very curious about Spears’ performance and whether she can actually revive her ruined career this time.
"It feels like it's her year," he said, according to BBC News. "It's our 25th anniversary of the VMAs and she's been such a critical piece of MTV's history."
Other musicians confirmed for the show, which will be presented by UK comedian Russell Brand, include Rihanna, Jordin Sparks, Kid Rock and The Jonas Brothers.
Toffler also said something about a possible appearance of Michael Jackson, but admitted he doubted that was going to happen.
In the Video of the Year category, Britney Spears is competing against Chris Brown's "Forever," the Jonas Brothers' "Burnin Up," "Shut Up and Let Me Go" by the Ting Tings and The Pussycat Dolls' "When I Grow Up."
